On the Effects of Extended-Source Morphology on Emission-Line Redshift Accuracy

We discuss the effects of emission-line regions distributed asymmetrically in extended galaxies on redshift estimates. Using published estimates for the distance distribution of line-emitting regions, we present a Monte Carlo simulation and establish that the redshift uncertainty is typically σz/(1+z)∼0.0007. We discuss several options to mitigate this uncertainty, most of which require data taken in multiple orients.
